What causes heel pain?

Heel pain in children is one of the conditions we address for families. However, adults also experience painful heels that can benefit from our expert care.
Plantar fasciitis is the most common heel pain issue treated by our podiatrists. While there are various causes and treatment options, the healing process may take time depending on the condition's severity.

At The Foot Clinic, we help treat heel pain caused by Bursitis and Haglund’s Deformities. Bursitis occurs when the fluid-filled sac between bones and tendons becomes inflamed, while Haglund’s deformity is a bony growth at the back of the heel. As Dr Lauren Merritt states, this can lead to discomfort in the Achilles tendon insertion or bursitis.

Heel pain treatments

The primary goal for the podiatrists at The Foot Clinic is to pinpoint the cause of heel pain. "Once identified, we discuss the best evidence-based treatments to address the pain and prevent it from recurring," says Dr Suresh.

Heel pain is often caused by overuse or overload of the soft tissue structures around the heel. The podiatrists at The Foot Clinic in Perth typically suggest supportive shoes, orthotics, and muscle strengthening exercises to help redistribute pressure and alleviate pain.

Exercises & home remedies for heel pain

Strengthening the calf muscles is crucial for both treating and preventing heel pain, as well as enhancing stability in the lower limb, foot, and ankle.

“First, we’ll get you started on isometric strengthening exercises. These are exercises where the position of the exercise is held for 10 to 30 seconds,” Dr Suresh says. “Next, we begin eccentric strengthening, which involves applying a controlled load to a muscle as it lengthens. And finally we prescribe concentric strengthening exercises, which work muscles as they contract.” These exercises are sent to you via our online app called Physitrack, “This is an important tool for a self-directed home exercise programme.” Says Dr Suresh.

How can I prevent heel pain?

The search for a quick solution to heel pain is common, but the real answer is straightforward: strong feet are essential. “Strong feet mean your bones are in the right place, your muscles are strong and your balance mechanism is working well,” Suresh says. “If you have strong feet, you won’t have any problems with heel pain.”}
