Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA) surgery is a common procedure used to relieve the pain, discomfort, and complications caused by ingrown toenails. This highly effective treatment has a low recurrence rate and is particularly beneficial for recurring cases.

During the procedure, the problematic portion of the ingrown nail is removed, and typically, there is no significant cosmetic damage. Local anaesthesia is used to numb the area for your comfort during the procedure.

During your first consultation, your podiatrist will assess whether nail surgery is the best option for you. If surgery is recommended, pre-surgical neurovascular assessments will be carried out before scheduling the procedure.

Your podiatrist will first numb the toe using a local anaesthetic on the day of the surgery. After the toe is fully numb, a straight incision will be made to remove the offending portion of the nail. Phenol will then be applied to the base of the nail to destroy the nail matrix and stop regrowth.

The surgery itself takes approximately 15 minutes, with the consultation lasting 60 minutes. The time required may vary based on how many sides of the toenail need to be removed.

After the surgery, your podiatrist will apply sterile dressings to the toe and provide you with post-operative instructions. A follow-up will be scheduled 24-72 hours post-procedure to check for any signs of infection. For the first few days, we recommend wearing open shoes and resting your feet for at least two days.

After the surgery, you can walk and bear weight straight away. Normal activities can be resumed in a few days, and sports can be restarted after 2 to 3 weeks.
