The foot clinic difference
The Podiatrist's Story
Recently a patient came in with a chronic painful arthritic foot joint. Instead of focusing on orthotics and footwear, we worked on strengthening her postural foundations, that is, strengthening her feet. Then we looked further up the chain at her core strength, and identified a very weak and in fact injured pelvic floor.
That's when Dr Suresh referred the patient to the GP and laser clinic within Cottesloe Central, Azure Medical, and worked on a combined postural strengthening program.
"Together, we were able to create lasting changes. So while the problem presented as a foot pain issue, we ended up helping her address a much more life changing problem of weak pelvic floor and many years of bladder control issues. There were many tears at her follow up review because the pelvic floor treatment and foot strengthening exercises had changed her life. You can’t beat that. We have many stories like this from our work as podiatrists here in Cottesloe and the wider Perth region. When I share these stories with my wife and kids over dinner, they realise how much I love my work and being a podiatrist here in Perth."
This unique approach is what The Foot Clinic is all about. First Dr Suresh and his team use the latest evidence based techniques to reduce your pain to manageable levels. Then they look at the underlying causes of the problem. Once identified, they address them by protecting your feet and avoiding more damage. Finally, they give you the skills to strengthen your feet and core to provide postural strength and resilience. This tried and tested method is guaranteed to get you back on your feet and moving better than ever before.

SKIN AND NAIL VS MUSCLE AND JOINTS
When you visit the Podiatrists at The Foot Clinic in Cottesloe, Perth, their first priority is to deal with your pain. There are a number of causes of pain and discomfort. These may be corns and calluses, warts or nail problems such as ingrown toenails or fungal nails.
I'M IN PAIN: WHAT TO EXPECT?
The Foot Clinic Podiatrists first assess the problem and the cause. Are you struggling with a skin and nail problem or is it best described as muscle and joint pain? Quite often, the Podiatrists see a connection between what’s going on on the surface (eg callus distribution patterns) and what’s happening with our muscles and joints.
Sometimes a problem with your feet shows up elsewhere in the body. Such as your shins, knees, hips and back. All of these are postural related and linked to your postural foundations, your feet. And that’s why you need to sort out your feet first.
When we remove all the calluses on someone’s feet, they can feel the ground a lot better than before,” says Dr Ming Jay Tan. “That’s because the proprioceptive nerves - which are the nerves in your connective tissue that direct position and movement - are now more in touch with the ground. And that turns on the reflexive postural balancing system.
So solving a skin and nail problem is not just skin deep and can lead to a far bigger change. “It’s how your feet interact with the rest of your body," Dr Tan says. "A callus, corn or cracked heel treatment will often make you feel as if your feet were lighter. People often tell us after their regular 6 weekly routine treatment it feels like they are walking on air!"
Once your Podiatrist has fixed the pain, they will work on protecting your feet. "This is where your Podiatrist will discuss the use of a variety of protective devices, including shoes, orthotics, braces and strapping techniques to protect the problem area.”
“And we always look at the next step. That means working on your foot strength and resilience so the problem doesn’t reoccur. We use foot-to-core integration exercises, musculoskeletal strengthening and neuromuscular reflexive balance strengthening. Strengthening is what helps you change your posture, and that can even prevent or help delay your skin and nail problems from coming back."

“These days I have my own family which includes 3 rapidly growing kids, and I want to be around for them and watch them grow and develop into strong healthy young adults. And I love helping families and anyone who has a keen interest in staying fit, healthy, and mobile, because that’s what I’m passionate about.”
“As an elite sportsperson and podiatrist I like to think I can provide elite athlete care for everyone. We focus first on specifically treating sports injuries and then on integrating exercises and treatments that help you stay strong and resilient, and avoid injuries in the future.”
"Yes, sometimes laughter is the best medicine, and fortunately one of our Core Values at The Foot Clinic Perth is Fun. Being a sports podiatrist and working with not only patients but an entire team who actively embrace life certainly brings a lot of fun to our workplace and to our lives."
My passion for sports podiatry first took me to the AIS and The Foot Clinic in Canberra, and now as a husband, father and podiatrist working in Perth, I still have a very keen interest in sports and being fit, fast and strong. I’m passionate about taking care of the foot health of our athletes and sports professionals. But I’m just as passionate about looking after you if you’re into less intense sports and exercise, and simply enjoying walking pain free down at the beach. We are here for everyone, and it's all about strengthening your feet, preventing injury and enjoying being active
Suresh has an extensive background in sports podiatry and builds on that to help every patient at The Foot Clinic Perth.
"I was on the Board of Directors with Sports Medicine Australia and I was the WA Director for the Australasian Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine,” he says. “I also have worked at the Sydney Olympics, the Melbourne Commonwealth Games and even at the Hopman Cup here in Perth. It’s fun and a different type of challenge working with elite athletes, and now I love working with Perth mums, dads and their kids because that’s where I am in my life.”
Whatever type and level of sports or exercise, Suresh believes it’s all about creating that neuromuscular balance and strength. “I was lucky enough to be a fast runner as a kid, and I have always wanted to stay fit and strong. I enjoy helping others with their injuries and I love working on being fit, fast and strong as I truly believe it slows down the ageing process. I love sharing my experience with everyone who walks through the door, and helping them achieve the results they are after.”
The Foot Clinic Difference
The Foot Clinic podiatrists have a clear protocol: Fix the pain, protect the feet, strengthen the feet.
When you visit a podiatrist, it’s often because you are in pain or discomfort. Our first focus is to fix that pain,”
Suresh says. “It doesn't matter whether it’s heel pain, ankle pain, knee pain or a skin and nail problem. Then we work out the best way to protect the affected area. We will look at supportive devices to help you along the way, such as shoes, orthotics, braces and strapping techniques. But we definitely discuss and prescribe exercises to strengthen the muscles and joints in and above your feet. That's how you can avoid problems in the future.”
Suresh says that while this sounds simple, the detail he and his team go into, the technology they use, and the energy, passion and commitment they bring to their work is what sets his team apart from many other podiatrists in Perth.
What To Expect From Your Podiatrist
On your first visit, your podiatrist will take a comprehensive history and assess your situation. If you’re in pain, that will be the first priority.
Your podiatrist may recommend booking follow-up sessions to continue your treatment and address any more complex issues. "What inspires us is to see our patients live life to their full potential” Suresh says. “It's great to see them resume their normal activities -- whether it’s work, sports or simply enjoying day-to-day life. We help patients from all across the Perth metro area. Most of our patients come from the adjacent suburbs of Fremantle, South Fremantle, Claremont, Swanbourne, Peppermint Grove, Nedlands and of course Cottesloe.”
Another defining characteristic of the Foot Clinic is their 100% Money Back Guarantee.
"So if you’re not satisfied with us or our services, and we cannot fix that, we will give you your money back” Suresh says. “That’s how confident I and my team are about what we do and how we do it. We began this journey in 1999 and still love being at the cutting edge of our profession.”
