During the procedure, your podiatrist will numb your toe with a local anaesthetic. After the area is completely numb, a straight cut will be made through the nail, and the offending spicule will be removed. Phenol will be used at the base of the nail to prevent regrowth by destroying the nail matrix.

The surgery itself takes approximately 15 minutes, with the consultation lasting 60 minutes. The time required may vary based on how many sides of the toenail need to be removed.

Once the surgery is complete, your podiatrist will cover the toe with sterile dressings and give you post-operative instructions. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled within 24-72 hours to monitor for infection. In the first few days, wear open shoes and rest your feet as much as possible.

You can begin walking and bearing weight immediately after the surgery. Within a few days, you can return to normal activities, and sporting activities can be resumed in 2 to 3 weeks.
