The most common treatment for relieving the pain and complications caused by ingrown toenails is Partial Nail Avulsion (PNA) surgery. Known for its effectiveness and low recurrence rate, it’s a great option for recurrent ingrown toenails.

The procedure involves removing the portion of the ingrown nail causing the issue, with minimal cosmetic damage. A local anaesthetic is applied to numb the toe before the procedure is performed.

At the initial consultation, your podiatrist will evaluate if nail surgery is appropriate for your condition. If surgery is deemed necessary, pre-surgical neurovascular assessments will be performed before booking the surgery.

On the day of surgery, your podiatrist will begin by numbing the toe with a local anaesthetic. Once the toe is fully numb, a straight cut will be made through the nail to remove the offending spicule. A chemical agent, phenol, will be applied at the base of the nail to destroy the nail matrix and prevent regrowth.

The surgery itself takes approximately 15 minutes, with the consultation lasting 60 minutes. The time required may vary based on how many sides of the toenail need to be removed.

Following the surgery, your podiatrist will dress the toe with sterile bandages and give you post-operative care instructions. A follow-up will be scheduled within 24-72 hours to monitor for signs of infection. During the first few days, wear open shoes and rest your feet for the first two days.

You will be able to walk and bear weight immediately post-surgery. After a few days, you can resume your regular activities, with sports being possible after 2 to 3 weeks.
